Breast Augmentation with Implants
Who Are Breast Implants For?
- Breast implants are suitable for patients with insufficient breast volume or those whose breasts have been altered by pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight changes, or aging.
- Implants are also used for:
- Breast reconstruction after mastectomy
- Correcting congenital or acquired breast anomalies, such as asymmetry, aplasia, hypomastia, and hypoplasia
- Replacing old or defective implants
- Aesthetic enhancement
- Typically, an increase of one to two cup sizes is recommended for a natural result and to minimize the risk of complications. For example, if you currently wear an A cup, we can generally achieve a C cup through augmentation. Increasing more than two cup sizes may result in a less natural appearance and higher complication risks.
Types of Implants
- A wide variety of breast implants are available, allowing you and Dr. Eburdery to select the one that best suits your body shape.
- Implants vary in shape (round or anatomical), content (saline or silicone gel), texture (smooth or micro-textured), volume, flexibility, and projection.
- Modern breast implants consist of a silicone elastomer shell filled with a silicone gel that closely mimics the natural consistency of breast tissue.
- The volume will be determined based on your preferences, ensuring harmony between the desired size and your body’s proportions.
- In addition to projection, the surgeon can adjust the width and height of anatomical implants to achieve the best possible fit.
Before the Procedure
- A pre-operative consultation with Dr. Eburdery is essential to determine the most appropriate surgical solution for your case.
- You can refine your choices and visualize your future silhouette with sizer trials and before-and-after photos.
- Dr. Eburdery will explain the specifics of the breast augmentation procedure in detail.
- You will need to provide signed consent before proceeding with the surgery.
- If you are a smoker, it is imperative to quit smoking at least three weeks before the procedure and refrain from smoking for up to one month afterward to reduce the risk of complications and promote healing.
- Avoid medications containing aspirin in the days leading up to the surgery. Any necessary adjustments to your medication will be discussed during your consultation.
- On the morning of the surgery, pre-operative markings will be made on your chest to guide the procedure.
Breast Augmentation Procedure
- The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and typically lasts around two hours.
- Surgical Approach:
- Areolar Route: The incision is made around the areola, resulting in a barely visible scar that blends with the natural skin tone.
- Inframammary Fold: This traditional approach involves an incision under the breast, which may result in a more visible scar.
- Implant Placement:
- Retroglandular (Behind the Mammary Gland): This method requires sufficient skin and fat thickness to prevent the implant from being visible in the décolleté.
- Retropectoral or Dual-Plane (Behind the Pectoral Muscle): This technique provides natural results by supporting and concealing the implants, even in patients with less body fat.
- A complete pre-operative evaluation is required, including a mammogram, MRI, ultrasound, blood tests, and cardiovascular assessment. Photographs will be taken, and an anesthesia consultation will be scheduled.
Post-Operative Recommendations
- Dr. Eburdery will provide specific instructions for your recovery:
- Wear a support bra 24 hours a day for the first month, and during the day for an additional month.
- Avoid showers and baths for one week.
- Light physical activities, such as walking or stationary cycling, may be resumed from the second week.
- Intensive exercise can be resumed after the sixth week.
- Plan for one to two weeks off work, depending on your job requirements.
- Post-operative consultations will be scheduled regularly during the first two weeks, with follow-ups continuing over a year.
Resuming Physical Activity
- Lower Body: After 1 month
- Upper Body: After 2 months
- Full Activity: After 3 months
Work Absence
- Depending on your job, a few days off may be necessary, with adjustments made for specific job constraints.

Breast Implants Results
- The placement of implants achieves a harmonious and natural breast shape, with volume proportional to your silhouette and minimal scarring.
- Initial results are visible within a few days, though some swelling may occur. By 3 months, the breast typically achieves its natural appearance, with final results expected after 1 year.
- Beyond the aesthetic benefits, the psychological impact is often positive.
Post-Surgical Care
- Some discomfort may be experienced post-operatively, which may develop into mild aches for a few days. Pain relief medication can be provided if needed.
- As with any surgery involving a foreign body, there are risks of complications, including:
- Reduced sensitivity in the areola (usually temporary)
- Swelling
- Hematomas
- Infection
- Implant-related issues, such as folds, skin distension, or implant rupture, which may require replacement.
- In the event of complications, Dr. Eburdery will provide the necessary care and treatment.
Risks and Complications
- One potential complication following breast augmentation is capsular contracture, where the body forms a thickened capsule around the implant, leading to pain and deformation. Surgical intervention may be necessary to correct this issue.
- Factors such as precise surgical technique, strict asepsis, and appropriate implant selection help minimize the risk of complications.
- Dr. Eburdery will discuss all potential side effects and complications during your pre-operative consultations, and you will receive informed consent documents and an information sheet from the French Society of Aesthetic Surgery (SOFCEP).
